Common auto electrical jobs in Uralla
Uralla sits about 23 km south-west of Armidale where the New England Highway meets Thunderbolts Way. Foundries, metal manufacturing and sheep, cattle and grain farms keep work vehicles busy, and tourists pass through on the way south.
Work utes and trucks
Uralla's foundries and metal businesses are major local employers, and their staff and suppliers run utes, vans and trucks every day. Work vehicles do a lot of stop-start driving with lights, radios and tools all drawing power, and charging systems wear out sooner than on a family car. If the battery warning light flickers or the lights dim at idle, have the alternator output checked. Our guide on the battery warning light explains what it can mean.

Towing on Thunderbolts Way
Thunderbolts Way leaves the highway in Uralla and heads south through Walcha towards Gloucester. It is a hilly, winding road across the Great Dividing Range, so caravans and horse floats need trailer brakes that work properly. Check the brake controller, the 7-pin or 12-pin plug and the breakaway system before you go. A plug full of dust or corrosion can cause brakes or lights to cut out on a bumpy section. Our guide 7-pin vs 12-pin trailer plugs explains the options.

Older cars and classic wiring
Uralla grew out of the 1850s gold rush at nearby Rocky River, and around the shire you'll find plenty of older cars, farm utes and restored vehicles. Age brings brittle insulation, tired earth straps, dirty connections and globes that blow more often. Faults in older wiring tend to be intermittent, which makes them frustrating. Start with the simple things: a clean battery, tight terminals and good earths. Our guide how to use a multimeter on a car helps you test them.

Headlights for country roads
Most roads out of Uralla, including Thunderbolts Way north to Bundarra and south to Walcha, are unlit country roads where kangaroos are common around dawn and dusk. Dull, yellowed or badly aimed headlights cut your reaction time. Replacing tired globes in pairs, cleaning lenses and checking the aim is a good start. Our guide how do I change my headlight globe walks you through it.

Uralla auto electrical questions
Is Uralla part of Armidale Regional Council?
No. Uralla is the administrative centre of Uralla Shire, which also takes in Bundarra, Kentucky, Arding, Kingstown and other localities. We group it with Armidale on this site because it is only about 23 km away and many people travel between the two for work, school and services. Auto electricians from both towns often cover each other's areas.
My trailer lights work in town but fail on rough roads. Why?
That usually points to a loose or corroded connection, often in the plug, the socket or an earth on the trailer. Vibration on rough or winding roads opens up a poor joint and the light drops out. Clean both halves of the plug, check the pins are tight, and make sure the trailer has a solid earth back to the vehicle, not just through the towball.
Do caravans towed from Uralla need electric brakes?
In NSW, a trailer with a gross trailer mass over 750 kg needs brakes on at least one axle, and over 2,000 kg it needs brakes on all wheels and a breakaway system. Most caravans fall into these groups. The brakes must be operable from the driver's seat, which usually means an electric brake controller. Check the current rules with Transport for NSW before you tow.
Local tip for Uralla
If you're heading south on Thunderbolts Way with a van, do your electrical checks in Uralla, not halfway down the range. Plug the van in, walk around to check every light, test the brakes with the controller's manual lever at low speed, and confirm the breakaway battery is charged. Services are thin between towns, so a ten-minute check is worth it.
